Drove my son back to college this past weekend. Was inspired by the bleak and sterile winter landscapes as we drove along US Hwy 151. This area is constantly being sculpted by the weather and forces of man and industry.
I always love the views flying past me along the way. The drumlins, the oak stands, the valleys, and then, in Iowa, wind blown expanses, the vast plain, the grain mills. Most recently the area near the school was brutally reshaped by the derecho that blew through in August of 2020.
On this trip I decided to have my son take some photos as we sped along.
I have cropped some to produce several watercolor studies. I want to attempt to do 10 or 20 pieces from these images. ‘Dialogue with an Iowa Landscape.’ A visual love poem to the land, the people, and the connections across the Mississippi valley, from the drumlins of Wisconsin to the plains of the deep midwest.
Stay tuned…
I hope you find some joy viewing my work.
